Adhatoda vasica བ་ཤ་ཀ་

English nameMalabar nut tree

Tibetan name: Ba-sha-ka (བ་ཤ་ཀ་)

Part used: twigs, leaf, flowers and seeds (ཡང་ཕྲན་དང་ལོ་མ་རྩེ་མོ་བཅས་)

Taste and potency: bitter taste (རོ་ཁ་བ་); bitter post-digestive taste (ཞུ་རྗེས་ཁ་བ་); cooling potency (ནུས་པ་བསིལ་བ་)

 

Profound value of Adhatoda vasica in Tibetan Medicine:

  • "Bad" Blood disorders (ཁྲག་ངན་རྒྱས་པའོ་ནད་): lowers blood pressure. Strengthens the walls of blood vessels and improves circulation. Cleanses the blood and liver. Treats various types of headaches including migraines. Heart palpitations and rhythm disorders. Heaviness in the chest, stabbing chest pains, difficulty breathing, trembling, dry cough and mouth, hoarseness, redness of eyes. Helps to cleanse the blood of toxins, lowers blood cholesterol levels, improves blood counts, reduces blood viscosity and clotting. Removes “bad” blood and blood fever ( ཁྲག་ཚད་). Heals infections sores and relieves pain caused by blood disorders. 
  • Tripa and liver disorders ( མཆིན་ཚད་མཁྲིས་ཚད་): reduces liver inflammation, excessive secretion of bile. Eliminates reflux of bile in hollow organs (stomach and intestines). Promotes dilution and outflow of bile. Good for bitterness in the mouth, headache, yellowing of the skin and eyes.
  • Used in decoctions to gather the fever.
  • Effective in treating throat and vocal cords problems, and therefore helps to produce better and sweeter voice. 
  • Malabar nut tree directs the action of a formula to the blood. 

 

According to the Second Tibetan Medicine Tantra (བཤད་པའི་རྒྱུད།):

།བ་ཤ་ཀ་ཡིས་ཁྲག་ཚད་མ་ལུས་སེལ།

Ba-sha-ka cures all fever associated with blood disorders.
